Urgent Action: Support Child Care Solutions for West Virginia Families
West Virginia is at a crossroads. We can continue to let families struggle to find affordable child care, or we can invest in a future where children thrive, parents can work, and businesses grow. The West Virginia Association for Young Children (WVAYC) is leading the charge to ensure child care is a legislative priority in the 87th Legislative Session, and the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce is standing with them.
West Virginia is facing a child care crisis that affects families, businesses, and the state’s economic future. Too many parents are struggling to find and afford high-quality child care, which is essential for their ability to work and for their children’s early learning and development.
The Challenges We Face
- Working families lack access to reliable child care—41% of children under age 6 cannot find care.
- Child care programs struggle to recruit and retain qualified employees due to low wages and funding shortages.
- Businesses across all sectors suffer from a shrinking workforce, impacting job growth and economic development.
How We Can Fix It
WVAYC is calling on West Virginia lawmakers to take action by:
- Improving funding to recruit and retain child care workers
- Strengthening financial assistance for families and providers
- Expanding child care availability across the state
