Full-Time Telecommunicator
Summary
Responsibilities include answering incoming calls from the public, inquiring nature of calls, routing calls and receiving and transmitting messages on teletype network. The employee in this position is responsible for preparing reports and monitoring transmissions. Duties include receiving and transmitting police, fire and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) messages using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System and Emergency 911 System.
Must be able to work any shift, holidays and weekends.
Essential Functions
Include the following:
- Prepares and maintains related reports.
- Receives and transmits messages to units.
- Enters and retrieves information from the computer terminal.
- Answers incoming calls from the general public and answers or routes calls to the appropriate source.
- Monitors transmissions as required.
- Performs typing tasks on the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System.
- Disseminates necessary written material such as directives and bulletins.
- Supervises preparation of a shift report detailing relevant activities which took place during the shift.
- Undertakes special projects as assigned.
- Possesses a high level of understanding of equipment functions.
- Ensures that all equipment is in working order.
- Provides equipment troubleshooting solutions and sees that necessary repairs are provided.
- Assists with and ensures that required equipment tests are conducted including but not limited to: Fire pager tests, TTY/TDD test calls, tornado siren tests, etc.
- Interprets policies and procedures.
- Ensures good working relationships with member departments and courteous treatment of the general public.
- Assures compliance with TCIC/NCIC and NLETS procedures and regulations.
- Assures necessary information is communicated to the next shift.

- Considerable knowledge of the NCIC/TCIC rules and regulations.
- Working knowledge of the IO-code operating signals.
- Good knowledge of federal, state, county and city laws or ordinances.
- Good knowledge of radio transmitter equipment and frequency controls.
- Good knowledge of the practices governing the operation of a central communications facility.
- Ability to demonstrate a highly motivated attitude and willingness to learn.
- Ability to maintain unbiased and professional communications with citizens.
- Ability to provide information regarding the location of streets, roads, and highways within the City/County.
- Ability to present a clear speaking voice and articulate messages in a concise manner.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use a computer. Good knowledge of PC operations and software (Word processing, spreadsheet and Computer Aided Dispatch System) are required. Touch typing skills are also required.

- Days off – Wednesday & Thursday
Education:
- High school or equivalent (Preferred)
Experience:
- Dispatching: 1 year (Preferred)
