West Tennessee Handicap Ramp Builders Named Haywood County “Community Star” by Southwest Tennessee Development District

JACKSON, TENN. — The Southwest Tennessee Development District recently hosted its Annual Meeting & Recognition Dinner at Madison Downs Venue in Jackson. At the dinner, SWTDD leaders presented Community Star Awards to six organizations/individuals, as well as a posthumous award to a public servant.

SWTDD defines a Community Star as “a steadfast organization that benefits their community by their presence; an organization that consistently offers assistance, support, and encouragement. These organizations are present at events, festivals, disaster cleanups, personal tragedies, and fundraisers. Often, they do not receive the recognition they deserve--not because they lack value, but because their motivations are rooted in genuine care for the community, not accolades.”

Each county’s award recipient was selected jointly by the city and county mayor that serves on SWTDD’s Executive Committee. West Tennessee Handicap Ramp Builder was presented the “Haywood County Community Star” award by County Mayor Jeffery Richmond and Brownsville Mayor Bill Rawls, Jr. at the event.

“West Tennessee Handicap Ramp Builder is a group of Christian carpenters led by Larry G. Stanley, Butch Porch, and other volunteers from churches throughout West Tennessee. … they come together with a shared mission to provide assistance, services, and financial support to individuals with limited mobility,” Haywood County Mayor Jeffery Richmond said.

“In addition to their ramp-building efforts, these dedicated volunteers often partner with Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief and neighboring counties to assist with debris cleanup and tree removal following severe weather and other disasters,” said Brownsville Mayor Bill Rawls. “This honor reflects the group’s dedication to serving others and making a positive difference throughout the region”

The seven Community Star award winners named were: Gleaners’ House (Chester County), the late Johnny Ralph Maness (Decatur County), Vaughn Oil Company (Hardeman County), Voices of Savannah (Hardin County), West Tennessee Handicap Ramp Builders (Haywood County), West Tennessee Dive Rescue and Recovery (Henderson County), and Stacy and Dwayne Thompson (McNairy County).

Southwest Tennessee Development District serves an eight-county region including Chester, Decatur, Hardeman, Hardin, Henderson, Haywood, Madison, and McNairy. SWTDD is committed to making a difference in West Tennessee by promoting rural and urban renewal through the improvement of the region’s economic base, physical infrastructure, and better quality of life.
