Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Position Summary:
The General Laborer in the Streets, Sidewalks, and Stormwater Division performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, right-of-ways, stormwater systems, and related city facilities. This position reports directly to the Streets, Sidewalks, and Stormwater Supervisor and is expected to perform work safely, efficiently, and cooperatively as part of a team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform street maintenance and repairs, including pothole patching, paving, and debris removal.
- Assist in the construction and maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and stormwater systems, including painting curbs and supporting beautification efforts
- Operate various tools, trucks, and construction equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, end-loaders, snowplows, and compactors.
- Clear streets and public areas of leaves and storm-related debris.
- Install and maintain street signs, pavement markings, and traffic control devices.
- Perform landscaping and right-of-way maintenance, including tree trimming and removal.
- Assist with stormwater infrastructure projects in collaboration with other city departments and agencies.
- Conduct regular maintenance and inspections of tools and equipment; report issues or needed repairs.
- Follow all safety procedures and participate in the development of safety plans for job sites.
- Respond to emergencies, including after-hours call-ins for flooding or infrastructure damage.
- Assist in the maintenance of other city facilities and public works duties as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions.
- Basic math and recording skills for logging materials, time, or project details.
- Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, and techniques used in street and utility maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain construction vehicles and power equipment.
- Skill in safely performing physically demanding work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills with co-workers and supervisors.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, graders, jackhammers, saws, compressors, mowers, chainsaws, compactors, leaf blowers, hand and power tools, radios, and phones.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, lift up to 50 pounds, operate equipment, and use hands and arms to handle tools.
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, climb, or work at heights or in confined spaces.
- Must be able to work in outdoor environments with exposure to dirt, weather, noise, and vibration.
- Vision and hearing sufficient for equipment operation and hazard awareness.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 6 months of related work experience preferred.
- Valid West Virginia driver’s license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
- Willingness to attend training and obtain relevant certifications as required.
Working Conditions:
This is a labor-intensive position requiring outdoor work in all weather conditions, with exposure to traffic, equipment, and other environmental hazards. The City of Weston maintains a drug-free workplace.
While employees may be primarily assigned to a specific division within the Department of Public Works (e.g., Collections, Pumping, Streets), they are employees of the City of Weston and may be required to assist in other divisions or perform duties elsewhere in the City as needed. All employees are expected to be flexible and willing to work across divisions, at the direction of their supervisor or the City Manager, to support the overall functioning and efficiency of city operations.
