Council Recognizes Volunteer Efforts at Arnold Cemetery
During the February City Council meeting, Council recognized several dedicated volunteers who have supported revitalization efforts at Old Hill Cemetery on Arnold Street. The project began in November 2023, and the volunteers’ work has since received national recognition. Old Hill Cemetery—also known as Arnold Cemetery—is one of eight historic sites across the Mountain State recently added to the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery, established in 1820, is Weston’s oldest burial ground and is home to a Yellow Poplar tree estimated to be more than 200 years old.
“Each one of these places helps tell the story of our beautiful state, and it’s a privilege to continue sharing that with the rest of the world,” said Ennis Smith, Deputy Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Tourism.
This prestigious recognition would not have been possible without the dedication of the all-volunteer group that continues to preserve and promote Arnold Cemetery. The City extends its sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed their time and effort to this important project.
