2026 Primaries - Voting Information

Primary elections are underway! The primary races are as follows:

• U.S. Senate
• U.S. House
• Kansas Governor/Lt. Governor
• Secretary of State
• Kansas House of Representatives seats
• State Board of Education
• Johnson County Commission Chair

State Constitutional Amendment

The primary ballot also includes a proposed state constitutional amendment and all voters, including those registered as independent, can vote on this amendment. This amendment is regarding whether or not Kansas will keep its current Supreme Court Justice nomination and selection process.

Since 1958, the current process includes a 9-member Supreme Court Nominating Committee consisting of five attorneys and four non-attorney members who evaluate applicants. This committee then selects three candidates with the governor choosing one from this group. Justices face a statewide retention vote after one year, then statewide retention votes every six years thereafter. 

The proposed state constitutional amendment abolishes the Nominating Committee and instead allows Kansans to vote directly for Supreme Court Justices on the ballot. Justice candidates could campaign like other elected officials and would have a term of six years.

This amendment allows Kansas legislature to decide the details of how Supreme Court elections would be executed, including whether they would be partisan, statewide or state apportioned into districts, how interim vacancies would be filled, and more.
