A Proud Blairstown Community Tradition

The Blairstown Fishing Derby may be a one-day outing, but it’s part of a larger tradition of seasonal outdoor programming in Blairstown that celebrates nature, recreation, and community connection. Hosted at Footbridge Park, the derby reflects a growing emphasis on family-friendly outdoor events that encourage residents to engage with local waterways, seasonal wildlife conservation efforts, and outdoor sports that traditionally sustained our community.

While this is the Committee’s inaugural year as the organizing host, the Fishing Derby itself has a long history in the community and has been supported and organized by a variety of local individuals and groups over the years. Past contributors have included organizations such as Knot Just Flies, along with other community-minded volunteers and partners who have helped keep the tradition alive and evolving through the years.

Fishing has long been a tradition in Blairstown, with generations of residents growing up along its streams and waterways. At the heart of this tradition is the Paulinskill River.  For many local families, the Paulinskill has been more than just a fishing spot, it's a gathering place and the home of most residents earliest childhood memories. Anyone who grew up in Blairstown has at least one memory of fishing in our local waterways, many of whom were guided by parents or grandparents who themselves grew up fishing the same waters. These early experiences created lasting traditions, with fishing trips becoming a rite of passage passed down through generations.

The river’s calm stretches and seasonal trout runs made it especially popular for casual anglers and those looking to spend time outdoors rather than pursue competition. Over the years, it has remained a consistent backdrop for community life, even as the town has changed around it.

Today, events like the Blairstown Fishing Derby at Footbridge Park continue to build on that legacy, celebrating not just the sport of fishing, but the shared history and memories tied to the waters of the Paulinskill.
