Fireside Chat at Camp WaNoKi: Flint Knapping Demonstration

The Webster and Hamilton County Conservation Boards invite the public to an evening of history, skill, and hands-on learning at Camp WaNoKi. On Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., participants can gather for a Fireside Chat focused on the ancient art of flint knapping.

Flint knapping—the process of creating stone tools by striking and shaping flint—was once a vital survival skill practiced by early human societies. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the techniques of controlled flaking, learn about striking angles, and try their hand at making projectile points, blades, or scrapers.

“This program offers a fascinating look into the craftsmanship and ingenuity of our ancestors,” said John Laird, Hamilton County Naturalist. “It’s a chance to connect with history in a hands-on way while enjoying the natural setting of Camp WaNoKi.”

The event will be held at Camp WaNoKi, 2401 WaNoKi Camp Road, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Registration is required and can be completed online at www.mycountyparks.com under the Hamilton County page.
