Honoring Our Heroes: The Lee County Veterans Wall and Memorial Park
Along Highway 11 in Beattyville, just before the railroad tracks, stands a quiet and powerful symbol of Lee County’s pride, the Lee County Veterans Wall and Memorial Park. This lasting monument honors the brave men and women from our community who have served our nation in times of war and peace. Each engraved brick tells a story of courage, sacrifice, and love for home and country.
A Place of Honor and Reflection
The Veterans Wall stretches proudly beside a row of waving American flags, each one representing the spirit of service that runs deep through our Appalachian hills. It is a place where residents and visitors can pause, reflect, and give thanks to those who wore the uniform. From the earliest wars in our nation’s history to modern-day conflicts, the wall represents generations of Lee Countians who answered the call of duty.
At the top of the memorial park hill stand additional monuments dedicated to those who gave their lives in active military service. Their names are a solemn reminder that freedom often comes at a great cost, and that the people of Lee County have always stood ready to serve when called upon.
Nearby, another monument honors the seven local residents who tragically lost their lives in the 1977 runaway gas truck explosion that struck several Main Street businesses in downtown Beattyville. Their names are etched in stone so that their memory and the impact of that day will never be forgotten. Together, these monuments create a place of remembrance not only for those who served in uniform, but for all in our community whose lives have shaped our shared history.
A Family Tradition: Take a Piece of History Home
A simple yet touching activity is to bring a sheet of paper and a crayon to make a name rubbing from the wall. Place the paper over your loved one’s brick and gently rub the crayon across the surface. The name and service details will appear, creating a special keepsake you can frame and date as a family memento. It’s a small act, but one that connects generations, teaching children about the importance of service and preserving local history in a personal way.
Adding a Name to the Wall
Families who wish to honor their veteran can purchase a service brick to be added to the wall.To begin the process, contact the Three Forks Historical Museum at 606-464-2888.
