Inside Sweetser: A Look at the Future of Mental Health Care in Maine
At the end of May, The York Chamber community had the opportunity to step behind the scenes at Sweetser's Saco campus for an educational session and guided tour.
What we found was much more than a school or treatment provider. We found an organization tackling some of Maine's biggest challenges head-on and making a huge impact. Learn more.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the most impressive parts of the visit was Sweetser's experiential learning programs.
Programs include Farm Sciences, Engine Technology, Woodshop, Culinary Arts, and Media Arts—giving students hands-on experience while helping them build confidence, life skills, and career pathways.
Support in the York Region & Across Maine
While many know Sweetser for its educational programs, its reach extends far beyond the classroom.
The organization provides services throughout Maine, in the York Region that includes the Hope and Healing Center in Sanford and York County's Mobile Crisis Response program.
These resources provide immediate support for individuals and families navigating mental health challenges and help ensure care is available when and where it's needed most. Learn more.
A First for Maine
The biggest news of the day focused on the future.
Sweetser is preparing to break ground this summer on Maine's first Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF). Learn more.
It's a project years in the making—and one that addresses a critical need. Today, many Maine families must send children out of state to receive intensive residential mental health treatment. The new facility will allow more young people to receive specialized care closer to home, surrounded by their support systems. Sweetser's goal is to begin welcoming students in April 2027.
How Businesses Can Help
The project is also creating an opportunity for the business community to make a meaningful impact.
Through the Hope Challenge campaign, Sweetser is inviting businesses to become champions for the new facility through leadership gifts and community fundraising efforts.
We learned about Sweetser's Mental Health First Aid training programs, which help workplaces recognize and respond to mental health concerns before they become crises. As mental health continues to affect workforce participation, productivity, and employee well-being, these trainings offer practical tools for businesses of every size.
Looking Ahead
Our visit served as a powerful reminder that mental health is not just a healthcare issue—it's a workforce issue, a community issue, and an economic issue. We're grateful to the Sweetser team for opening their doors and sharing their vision for the future.
