Honoring the Memory of Dolly Parton - Fly the United States Flag at Half-Staff Through Tuesday 9/1/2026 at Sunset

Dolly Parton’s influence extends far beyond her music, including right here in Maine. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Maine children can receive a free book mailed to their homes each month. The program expanded statewide in 2023 and has become an important part of Maine’s early childhood literacy efforts.

Following Parton’s passing on August 25, 2026, President Donald Trump ordered the United States flag to be flown at half-staff nationwide in her honor. The order applies immediately through sunset on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at federal buildings, military installations and other federal properties.

In Maine, Governor Janet Mills has directed that both the United States and Maine flags be lowered statewide, beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, and continuing through the same period.

The tribute recognizes Parton’s extraordinary cultural legacy as well as her decades of philanthropy, including her commitment to childhood literacy. You can find more information on Half Staff.
