Fall Into the Maine Beaches

Crisp coastal mornings, brilliant foliage, quiet beaches and a calendar full of classic Maine fall adventures.

September and October bring a whole new rhythm to The Maine Beaches. As summer crowds thin and the leaves begin to turn, York County becomes the perfect place to chase fall color, explore scenic backroads, visit local farms and enjoy the coast at its most peaceful. For sweeping views, head to Mount Agamenticus in York, where trails lead to vistas stretching from the Atlantic toward the New Hampshire mountains.

Fall is also prime time for apples, pumpkins and cider doughnuts. Plan a visit to Spiller Farm in Wells, McDougal Orchards in Springvale or Zach’s Farm in York, and let the scenic drive become part of the adventure.

The coast offers another side of fall, too. With more than 30 miles of sandy beaches, September and October are ideal for long walks, beachcombing and quiet moments by the water. Cooler temperatures make it a great season to get outside, with trails at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm, Emmons Preserve, and Ogunquit’s Marginal Way offering plenty of opportunities to explore. Arts and culture also take center stage with performances at the Ogunquit Playhouse, galleries throughout the region and historic discoveries in South Berwick.

The fall calendar is packed with reasons to visit, including York Harvestfest, an annual Fall festival held in the heart of York Beach (at the Ballfield and across the street at York's Wild Kingdom's entrance). This year the all day event takes place on Saturday, October 17.

Take the long way this fall. Explore inland towns, follow the color, find a festival and end the day beside the ocean. In the Maine Beaches, fall is more than a season—it’s an invitation to explore.
