K9 Challenge Showcases Elite Working Dogs and Handlers

A High Energy, Family Friendly Event Coming May 30

What You’ll See at the K9 Challenge

Steamboat Springs is gearing up for one of the most exciting community events of the season as the K9 Challenge returns to the Howelsen Rodeo Grounds on Saturday, May 30. Hosted by the High Desert Police K9 Association, this annual event brings together elite working dogs and their skilled handlers for a full day of demonstrations, friendly competitions, and community connection.

As Steamboat Springs Police K9 Officer Brenden Andrews shared, “This event is a great opportunity for the community to see firsthand the incredible abilities and training of working K9 teams.”

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., spectators can watch K9 teams compete and demonstrate the precision, athleticism, and discipline that define their work. Events include:

  • Obedience and agility demonstrations
  • Detection work
  • Fastest dog competition
  • Hardest hitting
  • Best grip
  • Muzzle work

These demonstrations highlight the strong partnership between handlers and their K9 partners—teams who play a vital role in public safety.

Free Admission & Community Fun

This is a free, all‑ages event, making it a perfect Saturday outing for families, dog lovers, and anyone curious about the behind‑the‑scenes world of working K9 units.

Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy:

  • Raffle prizes
  • Silent auction items
  • Event merchandise

Proceeds support continued training, equipment, and program needs for participating K9 teams.

Important Note About Pets

For the safety of all working dogs and handlers, personal pets are not permitted at the event. Only participating K9s will be allowed on site.
