A Place to Rest, Connect, and Enjoy Downtown: AARP Grant Brings 18 New Benches to Ponca City
A $15,000 AARP Community Challenge grant adds 18 benches to Downtown Ponca City, supporting comfort, walkability, and community connection.
Downtown improvements can make a meaningful difference in everyday life—even something as simple as having a comfortable place to sit.
In May 2026, Ponca City Main Street was selected to receive a $15,000 Flagship Grant through the 2026 AARP Community Challenge grant program. With approximately 5,100 applications submitted nationwide, this year’s program was incredibly competitive. We are proud that our project stood out and grateful for the opportunity to bring this investment to our community.
Through this funding, Ponca City Main Street secured 18 new benches placed in key locations throughout downtown’s central business district, creating more opportunities for residents and visitors to rest, gather, and enjoy downtown.
Making Downtown More Comfortable and Connected
For residents age 50 and older, individuals with disabilities, and anyone who needs a break between destinations, seating can make exploring downtown more comfortable and manageable. With senior living apartments, essential services, locally owned shops, and restaurants within the district, these benches support the everyday activities that help people stay independent and connected to their community.
They also provide welcoming places to visit with a neighbor, enjoy a meal or treat, and take in the activity of downtown. Whether someone is running errands, shopping locally, or attending a community event, having a place to pause can help them spend more time enjoying everything downtown offers.
Bench placement was coordinated with the City of Ponca City and was subject to City review and approval. While Ponca City Main Street worked to identify locations that would serve downtown residents and visitors, final placement depended on where installation was permitted under City guidelines and by individual property owners. The benches were installed in approved locations through this collaborative process. Thank you to the City of Ponca City Traffic Engineering Department for the printing and installation of the bench plaques.
Supporting Our Community’s Vision
Ponca City Main Street’s Economic Vitality Committee pursued this grant because the project directly supports both of our community-driven transformation strategies: Placemaking and Business Recruitment and Retention.
These strategies were shaped by a community survey that received more than 700 responses in January 2025. One shared goal is to strengthen connections between downtown destinations and encourage pedestrian movement throughout the district.
Additional seating supports that vision by providing resting points between businesses, services, and gathering spaces. A more comfortable walking experience encourages people to explore another block, visit another shop, or stay a little longer—supporting both community connection and the businesses that make downtown special.
Thank You, AARP!
Ponca City Main Street extends a heartfelt thank-you to AARP for investing in our community through the 2026 AARP Community Challenge. This funding made it possible to turn a community priority into a lasting improvement that benefits people of all ages.
We also appreciate the work of our Economic Vitality Committee, volunteers, and City partners in helping bring this project to life.
We invite the community to celebrate this investment with us at our ribbon-cutting! Visit the Facebook event page for event details.
The next time you’re downtown, take a seat, enjoy your surroundings, and stay awhile!
