Stevens Point Downtown Explores Science Discovery Initiative, Invites Community Collaboration

Grant application could bring new opportunities to connect science, local businesses, education, and community experiences in 2027.

STEVENS POINT, WI – October 15, 2026 – Stevens Point Downtown Business Improvement District has submitted an application for a $10,000 planning grant through the Science Discovery on Main Street initiative, a collaboration between Main Street America and the Simons Foundation. If selected, the funding would support the development of a community-driven science discovery initiative in downtown Stevens Point during 2027.

While grant recipients are not expected to be announced until January 2027, Stevens Point Downtown is already interested in learning who within the community might want to help explore the possibilities.

The initiative offers an exciting opportunity to bring science beyond traditional classrooms and laboratories and into the heart of the community. Through creative partnerships, downtown businesses, educational institutions, scientists, artists, and community organizations could work together to make science accessible, engaging, and fun for people of all ages.

Imagine science popping up in storefronts, hands-on discoveries at community events, interactive demonstrations in public spaces, or opportunities to meet local scientists and explore how science connects to everyday life. These are just a few possibilities that could be explored through the planning process.

"Stevens Point is fortunate to have an incredible network of educators, scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and creative thinkers," said Karen Margelofsky, Executive Director of Stevens Point Downtown. "This opportunity could help us bring those talents together in new ways, creating experiences that spark curiosity, encourage discovery, and bring people into our downtown. While we don't know whether we'll receive the grant, we would love to begin connecting with individuals and organizations who share that vision."

Stevens Point Downtown is particularly interested in hearing from educators, scientists, UW-Stevens Point faculty and students, local businesses, technology and manufacturing professionals, artists, youth organizations, nonprofits, and community members who enjoy making learning fun and accessible.

At this stage, the Downtown BID is simply gathering interest and ideas. No formal commitments are being requested, and implementation of the proposed initiative is contingent upon grant funding and future planning.

"We believe some of the best community ideas come from bringing people together who might not otherwise have an opportunity to collaborate," Margelofsky added. "Even the conversations that begin through this process could help us discover new ways to celebrate the knowledge, creativity, and innovation already present in our community."
