Downtown Stevens Point is the heart of our community—a place where local businesses, people, and experiences come together. As a nationally accredited Main Street program and Business Improvement District (BID), we work collaboratively to strengthen our downtown economy, support entrepreneurship, encourage investment, and create a vibrant, welcoming district. We connect businesses and property owners with resources and opportunities while creating experiences that bring residents and visitors downtown. Together, we are building a thriving Downtown Stevens Point where businesses grow, connections are made, and our community comes to life.
What areas do you serve?
The Stevens Point Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) directly serves businesses and property owners within the designated Stevens Point Downtown district. Our work focuses on strengthening the economic vitality of the district through business support, beautification and placemaking, marketing, events, partnerships, and initiatives that encourage investment and enhance the downtown experience.
Where do the majority of your customers/visitors come from?
Stevens Point Downtown serves and attracts a diverse audience from Stevens Point, throughout Portage County, and surrounding Central Wisconsin communities. As home to UW–Stevens Point and Mid-State Technical College, our downtown also welcomes students, faculty, families, alumni, and campus visitors throughout the year. Tourism further expands our reach, with visitors coming to Central Wisconsin for recreation, events, the Wisconsin River, area parks and trails, camping, and other regional attractions.
Where do you deliver?
As a Business Improvement District, we do not provide traditional product delivery. Instead, we deliver programs, resources, marketing, events, beautification, business support, and economic development initiatives primarily within the Downtown BID boundaries. Our events and promotional efforts are designed to bring residents and visitors from throughout Central Wisconsin into Stevens Point Downtown to shop, dine, explore, and experience our district.
Stevens Point Downtown was created from a shared desire among downtown property and business owners to build a stronger, more coordinated approach to supporting the heart of our community. In October 2022, downtown property owners petitioned the City of Stevens Point to establish a Business Improvement District (BID). The district was formally approved in December 2022, with its first Board of Directors confirmed in January 2023.
In July 2023, Stevens Point Downtown reestablished recognition through Main Street America, providing a nationally proven framework for downtown revitalization. Using the Main Street Four-Point Approach—Economic Vitality, Design, Promotion, and Organization—we began building an organization focused not only on promoting the downtown, but on supporting the businesses, property owners, entrepreneurs, and investments that make the district successful.
Our role has continued to grow. Stevens Point Downtown now works on business retention and recruitment, façade and building improvements, public art and placemaking, beautification, wayfinding, events and promotions, redevelopment opportunities, stakeholder engagement, and initiatives designed to encourage private investment throughout the district. As downtown responsibilities evolved, the BID also took on additional community events and programming, creating a more unified approach to supporting and promoting the district.
Today, Stevens Point Downtown is a nationally accredited Main Street program and the organization dedicated to strengthening the economic vitality and vibrancy of our downtown district. We work collaboratively with businesses, property owners, entrepreneurs, the City of Stevens Point, community organizations, educational institutions, residents, and other partners to create an environment where businesses can thrive and people want to visit, invest, and connect.
Our journey is still evolving. We are building on the history and character of our downtown while looking toward its future—supporting entrepreneurship, encouraging investment, creating memorable experiences, improving our public spaces, and reinforcing Stevens Point Downtown as the heart of our community.
