Watching Fireworks from the Kentucky River

Watch fireworks from the river!
There are a lot of ways to watch fireworks on the 4th of July. Lawn chairs. Tailgates. Parking lots.
But one of the most memorable ways? Floating quietly on the river as the sky lights up above you. 
This year, the public is invited to launch kayaks, canoes, and small boats on the Kentucky River to watch the community fireworks from the water, right beside Beattyville, where the North Fork and South Fork come together.
It’s simple. It’s peaceful. And it offers a view you can’t get anywhere else.

What to Expect on the Water
Boats will begin launching around 9:00 PM, giving paddlers plenty of time to make the short trip to the viewing area before fireworks begin. The paddle from the boat ramp to the viewing location is about ¼ mile, making it manageable for most paddlers who are comfortable being on the water after dark

Fireworks are expected to start between 9:45 and 10:00 PM, depending on darkness. From the river, you’ll see reflections dancing across the water, hear the echoes roll through the hills, and experience the show in a way that feels calm, immersive, and uniquely local.
There’s no registration, no cost, and no organized float—just neighbors and visitors sharing the river for a special night.

Bring Your Own Boat & Know the Rules
This is a bring-your-own-boat experience. Kayaks, canoes, and similar small craft are welcome.
Because this is an after-dark paddle, state boating laws apply. Boats must have proper lighting, including lights visible from the front and back. This isn’t just a suggestion—it’s required for safety and visibility on the water.
Paddlers should stay within their comfort level, be aware of others nearby, and plan to take their time. The goal isn’t speed—it’s enjoying the moment.
