Main Street Kirksville Showcases Downtown Impact at City Council Study Session

Main Street Kirksville was proud to participate in Monday evening’s City Council Study Session on Economic Development, where Executive Director Laci Cook joined community partners to share how downtown revitalization is driving growth across Kirksville. Cook highlighted Main Street Kirksville’s 2025 and early 2026 accomplishments—supporting small businesses, hosting community events, and improving the look and feel of downtown—along with the organization’s vision for the years ahead.

Participating in the study session were:

• Sharon Swehla – Tourism Director, City of Kirksville

Together, these leaders shared how their organizations are working in partnership to attract investment, support local businesses, increase tourism, create vibrant public spaces, and enhance quality of life in Kirksville.

Speaking on behalf of Main Street Kirksville, Cook emphasized that a strong downtown is essential to long‑term economic development. From business support and façade improvements to festivals, markets, and placemaking projects, she underscored how Main Street’s work is creating a more welcoming and resilient city center. “Downtown is Kirksville’s front porch,” Cook shared. “When we invest in our historic core—our small businesses, our public spaces, and our community events—we’re not just improving one street. We’re creating a welcoming, thriving place that reflects the pride and potential of our whole community.”

Throughout the evening, a consistent theme emerged: when organizations work together toward a common vision, the entire community benefits. By aligning efforts in economic development, business support, tourism, and downtown revitalization, Kirksville is better positioned to retain and attract talent, welcome visitors, and create opportunities for residents of all ages.
