Dolly Parton’s Legacy Lives On Through the Gift of Reading

The world is mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, who died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80. Known around the world for her music, songwriting, acting and loving personality. Dolly was also a remarkable philanthropist whose generosity touched the lives of millions of people, especially children. For us, her passing feels especially personal because her vision continues to reach children right here in Mora County through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

One Book at a Time

Dolly Parton created the Imagination Library from a simple but powerful belief: every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy reading and have books of their own. The program began in her home county in Tennessee in 1995 and has since grown into an international effort providing millions of free, high-quality, age-appropriate books to children. As we remember Dolly in Mora County, we also celebrate the 67 children currently receiving Imagination Library books and the 82 children who have graduated since 2020. Each book delivered to a child represents more than a story to read. It is an opportunity to share time together, build early literacy skills, and discover the joy of imagination.
These children and families are now part of Dolly's remarkable legacy: one that shows how a simple idea, rooted in generosity, can reach communities far beyond the beginnings.

A Special Invitation at Fall Fest

As we remember Dolly and celebrate the gift she has given to children and families, we invite past and present Imagination Library families to join us at Fall Fest on Saturday, September 26th, from 10am-3pm.

We will have a special Dolly Parton's Imagination Library booth where families and community members can stop by, share memories and sign cards expressing our gratitude and appreciation to Dolly and the Dollywood Foundation. The cards will be collected and sent as a heartfelt message from our community, a small way to for us to say thank you, Dolly, for believing in the power of books and the imagination of every child. Whether your child, grandchild, or nephew is currently receiving Imagination Library books or has already graduated from the program, we hope you will visit our booth and be part of this special tribute.

Continuing the Legacy

Dolly Parton's legacy reminds us that supporting children, families, literacy, creativity and community can begin with something as simple as a book. We are grateful to be part of an effort that brings books directly into the homes of children in Mora County and gives families another opportunity to read, learn, and imagine together.

If you would like to help us continue creating opportunities for children, families, and our community, support Mora Main Street through a donation. Your support helps us continue our work in arts, culture, community activities, and opportunities that bring people together.

We invite our community to come together at Fall Fest, share a memory, sign a card, and celebrate the lasting gift Dolly Parton gave to children everywhere: the opportunity to open a book and imagine what is possible.
