The Legacy of the Royal on Main

There are moments in a downtown's story when someone chooses to see possibility where others see risk.

In January 2018, Stan and Shanna Fretwell walked through a vacant historic building on Main Street with a vision. The 1897 structure had stood for generations, serving many purposes throughout its history, but like many historic buildings, it was waiting for someone willing to imagine what it could become next. Over the next eighteen months, that vision became reality. In August 2019, The Royal on Main opened its doors, bringing boutique lodging back to Historic Downtown Batesville and creating a destination that would welcome visitors from across Arkansas and beyond.

But the story of The Royal on Main was never just about a building.

It was about believing in downtown.

It was about investing in a place worth preserving.

It was about creating a welcoming space where birthdays, weddings, family reunions, vacations, celebrations, and life's most meaningful moments could unfold.

Today, when visitors stay at The Royal on Main, they experience beautiful suites, historic character, and modern hospitality. What they may not realize is that behind every room is a story of faith, vision, hard work, and a family that chose to invest in the future of Downtown Batesville.

As the Fretwells prepare to pass the torch to a new local family, we pause to celebrate not only what they built, but the lasting impact they leave behind. Their investment helped strengthen our downtown, inspire future redevelopment, and remind all of us what is possible when people believe in a community enough to dream big.

The building stands as a beautiful hotel.
