Kansas Archeology Training Program Field School
Join the Kansas Historical Society and the Kansas Anthropological Association for the 2026 Kansas Archeology Training Program (KATP) Field School in Russell!
Participants will work and learn alongside professional and avocational archeologists in both field and lab settings. This year’s projects include a variety of fascinating site types — from a petroglyph carving and a possible tipi ring site to a historic farmstead, schoolhouse, two-story stone structure, and a site connected to World War II Army Air Forces history. Most of these locations have never been previously documented or researched, and additional survey work could lead to even more discoveries.
No experience is necessary — just a desire to learn. Training is provided, and archeology courses will be offered throughout the program.
Participants must be at least 12 years old. Youth ages 12–17 must be accompanied by a sponsoring adult. Attend for a single day, a weekend, or the full field school session. Daily participation is limited, and registration is first come, first served.
Registration Fees:
- Non-members: $90
- Kansas Historical Foundation or Kansas Anthropological Association Members: $35
- Ages 65+: $25
- Middle school, high school, and college students: $15
In addition to hands-on fieldwork, enjoy a full series of evening programs in Russell and the surrounding area. Evening programs are free and open to the public — attendance is not limited to field school participants.
