What is a Community Hevra Kadisha- and why it matters:
Wednesday May 15th - 7:30pm- 8:30 - online (link sent upon RSVP)

The privacy associated with the work of a Hevra Kadisha has historically kept its members from talking about their work, with the result that many Jews today don’t know about what a Hevra Kadisha does or how important it is in the life of the Jewish community. The Community Hevra Kadisha of Greater Boston invites you to a webinar to learn about our sacred work of caring for the dead.  This webinar will introduce a basic orientation to what a Hevra Kadisha is, and the tahara ritual specifically. We will share about our unique Hevra- why we have a public-facing mission, our work on gender- and how both synagogue membership and individual volunteers sustain our work.

RSVP to shahar.colt@hevrakadisha.org

PLEASE NOTE:

The JCA also has a Hevra Kadisha, a holy burial society, one for men and one for women. When a need arises, members of the group perform the Tahara (Hebrew for Purity) which is an age-old Jewish sacred ritual of caring for and preparing a deceased body for burial. Performing a Tahara, which is both task-oriented and spiritual, is considered the greatest Mitzvah because the person you are serving, the deceased, cannot say thank you.

Members of the JCA community are invited to contact us to learn more about the sacred practice of Tahara and to consider joining the Hevra Kadisha. New members will be guided by senior members of the group to learn about the ritual, and to observe and reach a comfort level before actively participating. The men’s group is in particular need of new members at this time, but all who are interested are welcome to inquire.
