Tackling a home improvement project? Don’t have the right tools to handle the job and/or don’t want to invest in expensive equipment? No problem! Greenback Equipment Rentals Inc., located at 9325 Greenback Lane has got you covered! The family owned business has been operating and handling the rental equipment needs of the Orangevale community for over 45 years.

From leaf blowers to jack hammers to bobcats to concrete mixers, just about every type of equipment needed to remodel, rebuild or start a project from scratch is available at an affordable cost just down the street. 

“We get lots of ‘do it yourself’ types”, said longtime Orangevale resident and business owner Jerry Culbertson. “Some people see things and think it’s easy to do and sometimes they learn the hard way.”

One such incident is still fresh in Jerry’s mind although it happened years ago, when a customer rented a backhoe to clear some cattails in and around his pond. Shortly after he rented the equipment, the customer called back to complain that the backhoe wasn’t working.

Jerry remembered going back and forth with the customer who seriously thought the backhoe was designed to work underwater!  He told him, “It’s not supposed to work like that. It’s not a submarine!” Not to mention the longer he left if there, the more his rental fees would go up! 

Luckily that incident is an exception to the rule and most customers are very pleasant and easy going. Jerry keeps a full-time staff of about seven full-time employees, and takes pride in regularly updating or replacing equipment as well as staying on top of what’s renting and what’s not.

On most days, you’ll either run into Jerry, Brian, or his number one “go to” guy Dale, who’s been working for Greenback Rentals for nearly 33 years. Between the three of them you can bet you’ll get what you need for just about any project you can think of. 

Having come to the area in 1950, Jerry has seen many changes over the years and still believes people come to Orangevale because “ it’s unique, has a good atmosphere and still has open, rural areas.” 

Jerry’s work experience has ranged from working at Gemco, to running the Texaco gas station on the corner of Illinois and Greenback, to buying and flipping homes, and now owning an equipment rental business. He’s thankful for the ability to make a creative living and looks forward to handing off the baton to his son, Brian, when the time is right.

“Running a small business like this is not easy,” he shared pointing to the over 12 licenses on the wall required to keep his doors open. “As long as I’m around though, I’m here to help people figure out how to do whatever they want,” he said.
