Earth Day Celebration
Celebrate our natural world!
Come together in a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and appreciation for the natural world.
“Nestled in the River Valley, the culture of Sunbury has long been shaped by the mighty Susquehanna. This inaugural event, organized by volunteers from the Climate Reality Project: Susquehanna Valley PA chapter and the Save our Susquehanna group, will recognize the individuals and organizations actively working to clean up the river and restore the local environment,” Ferrandi said. “In a time of deep divisions, Earth Day offers a unifying moment to come together in gratitude for the land and water that sustain us all, and in our shared love of the Susquehanna River.”
The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Cameron Park in downtown Sunbury, will feature educational activities, opportunities to learn about local conservation initiatives and worms! A vermiculture specialist will be on hand to introduce visitors to the concept of worm composting, officials said.
Visitors will be able to learn how to reduce plastic in their lives from the Sierra Club and spin a wheel of fortune with the Climate Reality Project. There will also be family-friendly “climate catastrophe” games and an interactive photo booth that brings the beauty of the Susquehanna River to Cameron Park through a green screen and papier-mâché turtles, Ferrandi said.
Each guest will receive a digital postcard from the Susquehanna, a unique keepsake they can share with friends and family to celebrate their connection to the river.
There will be booths from environmental groups, representatives from the local uniformed civilian volunteer flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, local crafts from MommaT Creations, representatives from the local maker space, STEAM Innovation labs and more, according to organizers.
